In case you missed it, last week an interesting article was published on developerWorks called "IBM Lotus Domino 8.5.2 XPages discussion database server performance" by Christopher Johnson and Wu W Huang. This reports on the perfromance results from comparing a classic Notes Domino Discussion database and it's subsequent 85x upgrade to XPages on a R852 Domino server.
We always knew that the performance improvements in 851 and 852 would be good but it's great to get it confirmed by this data. The conclusion says it all...
The performance of the XPages discussion application has improved in Lotus Domino 8.5.2. User scalability improved three times, and network bandwidth and user throughput (transactions per second) improved. The size of the discussion database increased because of the new features and the new discussion database template supported by XPages.
You can improve performance two ways, at server level and at app level. The Discussion app, discussion8.ntf, is a great place to start when looking for an example on how to improve the performance of your XPages application.

Ah, I got confused by the line Jeremy pointed out. I think you're right, both templates were running on 8.5.2.
Then in *that* case I'd be curious to see the 7.0.x template on 8.5.2 vs. on 7.0.3. That difference should be remarkable by itself based on what I'm seeing.
And if I really could scratch my itches I'd like to see 8.5.2 running the 8.5.2 template, with ODS43 vs. ODS51. :-D

Hi Erik,
I think both apps were run on the one 852 Domino server. No?

From the report it looks like a Domino 8.5.2 server was used to test both the 7.x template and the 8.5.2 template ... so its a true test of a different in performance between the XPages design and the "classic" design on the same server ...
From the report: "A single Lotus Domino server 8.5.2 was used to test and compare the performance of the classic and the XPages discussion databases."
I think the confusing like is that when it says they used the R7.x Template from Domino Release 7 .. which just stated the origin of the template, not the server used.

Actually you've got one big problem with this comparison - you're running the 7.0.x template on a 7.0.x server, right? So this is really a comparison of a new Domino version AND a new discussion template against an older version of both.
You obviously can't run the 8.5.2 discussion template on 7.0.x, but I'd like to see how the 8.5.2 server performs running the 7.0.x discussion template. That'd show you a true test of Domino (not template) performance differences between 7.0.x and 8.5.2.. which I still think would be significant.
